From community cats suffering in the streets to hoarder house cats suffering behind closed doors, Maria Meows transforms not only their lives, but also positively impacts the people who keep them and the broader community. We work for a day when no cats live in hoarder houses or on the streets and structures are in place to help our neighbors stop the suffering before it starts.

How We Began....

Maria Meows was created in March 2024 when founder, Maria Powers, met a bedraggled man in the cat food aisle at the grocery store where she works. She learned he had over 200 cats and was struggling to care for them. And that he was being evicted from his home because of the death of his grandfather. He had physical illness and had come onto hard times. He had nowhere to turn, and the town would do nothing to help.

Instead of shying away, Maria leapt into action. She started with no support, on her own, taking one or two of the cats out to get fixed and adopted. Over time, Maria cultivated a strong network of rescues and fosters with whom she coordinated in the herculean effort to fix, vet and adopt out what turned out to be over 250 cats from the East Brunswick Hoarder House into loving homes and barn placements.

Five months later, in August 2024, Maria Meows became a nonprofit. Our mission is to use our experience and network to save cats in hoarding situations, change the lives of the people who hoard, and advocate to prevent the suffering before it starts.
