Every colony you see has a story. A few cats become many. Many become hundreds. It doesn't take long.
Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the only method proven to stabilize and reduce outdoor cat populations over time. We trap community cats, get them spayed or neutered, vaccinate them, and return them to their colony. One surgery. No more kittens.
We operate in Central NJ, working with colony caretakers and community members to fix cats that would otherwise keep breeding.
What TNR Actually Does
Unmanaged, a single unspayed female and her offspring can be responsible for dozens of cats within a year. TNR stops that math cold.
A fixed cat:
Can no longer reproduce
Is vaccinated against rabies
Gets an ear tip — a small notch on the left ear — so they're immediately recognizable as already fixed
Returns to their colony, where they hold territory and prevent new unsterilized cats from moving in
That last point matters. Removing cats from a colony — which sounds logical — doesn't work. New cats fill the void. TNR works because it uses the cats themselves to stabilize the population.
The Cost
TNR is cheap relative to what it prevents.
$50 fixes one cat. That's one surgery, one rabies vaccine, one ear tip. One cat that will never produce a litter again.
For context: a single unspayed female can have two to three litters per year, with four to six kittens per litter. Fix her once for $50 and you've prevented potentially hundreds of cats over her lifetime and her offspring's lifetimes.
